Michigan football recently offered three-star offensive tackle Logan Howland and the emerging O-line target was impressed on his recent visit.

It’s clear that Michigan football needs to start building some momentum in the 2023 recruiting class. Yet, there are signs that slowly but surely, that’s starting to happen.

The official visit list for June is starting to fill up and a number of top targets are going to be on campus next month. Whether Michigan football can make real progress in those recruitments is another matter, but the Wolverines are building the foundation for a strong summer.

While the Wolverines don’t have the advantage of NIL on their side as some other programs do, Michigan football is really good at evaluating talent.

That’s been the case for years and was evident the last cycle with guys like Colston Loveland, Mason Graham, Zeke Berry, Damani Dent, and others.

The Wolverines are also really good at developing NFL talent. The proof is in the pudding in terms of NFL draft picks. Michigan has been particularly strong at developing offensive linemen and that had to be a selling point for this weekend’s visitor Logan Howland.

An emerging top target for Michigan football

Howland is a three-star offensive tackle from New Jersey listed at 6-foot-6, 280 pounds. He’s not ranked according to the 247 sports composite rankings yet On3.com has him as a three-star recruit and the ninth-ranked player in New Jersey, as well as the 54th offensive tackle nationally.

That seems more in line with his abilities and Howland is a classic candidate to rise up the rankings. Just like Ryan Hayes, a guy that’s currently being projected as a first-round pick at left tackle, Howland is a former tight end and he’s got elite size.

He’s still growing into his body and while his ranking doesn’t reflect it yet, he’s a growing commodity on the recruiting trail and has official visits set with Iowa, Miami, Oklahoma, and Vanderbilt.

This weekend, Howland took an unofficial visit to Ann Arbor to see the Michigan football program and it sounds like the Wolverines are a strong bet to get his final official visit.

Howland said he thought he would be a great fit at Michigan and he would be. He also wouldn’t have to look any farther than Hayes to see what the staff can do in terms of development.

There aren’t any crystal ball projections and the On3.com prediction machine doesn’t have a read on this recruitment yet, but Howland is a classic late-riser and a guy Michigan football will be in a strong position to land if it gets that official visit, which seems likely.
