For the first time since 1988, the Michigan tennis team has advanced to the Elite 8 of the men’s NCAA tournament after a 4-2 win over Texas. Next up is Ohio State.

Michigan and Ohio State are no strangers to important sports matchups and this Thursday will be the next as the Wolverines and Buckeyes will meet in the Elite 8 of men’s tennis.

The Wolverines punched their ticket to the Elite 8 on Saturday after the fifth-ranked Michigan men’s tennis team defeated Texas by a score of 4-2.

Ohio State and Michigan also met for the Big Ten championship this season, a matchup that went to the Wolverines, and hopefully, the next one will too.

The Wolverines grabbed the lead against Texas after they won the doubles point with a 2-1 advantage over the Longhorns thanks to wins by Patrick Maloney/Nick Beaty and Ondrej Styler/Jacob Bickersteth, which put Michigan tennis in front 1-0.

You need four points to win in a college tennis dual and there are six singles matches, which meant that Michigan needed three more wins and the Wolverines got them.

Maloney, who also won in doubles, notched a full point with a singles victory. Andrew Fenty, the No. 2 singles player for Michigan tennis was also victorious, as was Nino Ehrenschneider.

Fenty’s victory, which took three sets to complete, clinched the win for the Wolverines who can advance to the Final Four with a win over Ohio State.

Michigan was able to host the match Saturday against 12th-ranked Texas, but the Wolverines and Buckeyes will meet in Champaign, Illinois on Thursday in the regional final.
