Michigan Football: 3 potential flips for Wolverines in 2023 recruiting class

Michigan football was able to pull off some key flips in the 2022 recruiting class and in 2023, the Wolverines are aiming to do the same. 

There’s no doubt that things are a little stagnant when it comes to Michigan football’s 2023 recruiting class. The Wolverines are ranked outside the top 15 in the team rankings and haven’t gotten a commitment since late March.

Michigan football did pick up some expert projections this past week for the 2023 class, including one for a key under-the-radar prospect. A number of recruits are lining up visits for the big recruiting weekend in June and I’d expect some commitments around that time.

The Wolverines generally start building momentum with their recruiting BBQ at the Big House. It worked last summer and the focus right now is getting as many of those official visits locked in for this summer as possible and that includes recruits committed to other programs.

Amorion Walker, Keon Sabb, Zeke Berry, Damani Dent, Mason Graham, and Derrick Moore were all committed to other programs at one time or another last cycle and Michigan landed them all.

Michigan is aiming to flip some commitments now and here are three recruitments where the Wolverines probably have the best shot.

Aaron Gates — Florida DB commitment

The top flip candidate right now is four-star defensive back Aaron Gates, who is ranked 279th overall according to the On3 consensus rankings for 2023 and is committed to Florida.

However, the 6-foot, 180-pounder visited Michigan football last month and EJ Holland of The Wolverine has already put in a prediction for him to flip. The Wolverines now have a 46 percent chance of winning his recruitment according to the On3 prediction machine.

Gates is out of Sharpsburg, Georgia, and on top of his visit to Ann Arbor in April, he will be on campus for an official visit June 16-18 for the BBQ, so Michigan football has to feel good about its chances of flipping his commitment.
