Joe Stewart goes for 11 RBI in Michigan baseball’s win over Ohio State
Michigan baseball clinched a series win over Ohio State on Saturday thanks to an incredible performance from Joe Stewart who notched 11 RBI.
At some point, Ohio State probably regretted having to pitch to Michigan baseball’s Joe Stewart. Or at least, the Buckeyes had to dread seeing him come to the plate with runners on base.
Twice Stewart came to the dish with the bases loaded for Michigan baseball and twice, he hit grand slams. When his day was all said and done, Stewart hit a total of three home runs and finished with a total of 11 RBI.
The first grand slam came in the bottom of the second inning with the score tied 2-2. Stewart crushed a curveball out of the park and suddenly, it was 6-2 Wolverines.
Then, in the bottom of the third, Stewart again came to the plate with the bases juiced, and once again, he went yard, extending Michigan baseball’s lead to 12-2.
The score stayed that way between the Wolverines and Buckeyes until the bottom of the fifth, when Stewart bombed another homer, this time plating two runs as Michigan led 14-2.
Stewart hit another run home in the seventh and Michigan led 16-4 before things got a little dicey in the eighth and ninth innings as Ohio State scored nine runs in the last two innings.
However, Michigan was able to hold on for the 16-13 win, which was the fifth consecutive for the Wolverines, who also swept Michigan State last weekend. U-M is now 22-15 overall and 8-3 in the Big Ten.
Cameron Weston got the win, his fifth of the season, as the starting pitcher, followed a strong six-inning performance in which he allowed just two runs on six hits and struck out five.
Matt Frey and Clark Elliott also added two hits each in the win for the Wolverines. Michigan and Ohio State will wrap up their series on Sunday at 1 PM CST on the Big Ten Network.
