What Michigan Football is getting in transfer DT Cam Goode
Michigan football landed one of the top defensive tackles still available in the transfer portal in Cam Goode and here’s what the Wolverines are getting.
The Wolverines haven’t landed many players from the transfer portal over the years but on Friday, Michigan football landed a key reinforcement for its defensive line in former UCF transfer Cam Goode.
Michigan football’s defensive line looked really solid this spring, despite the loss of Chris Hinton to the NFL draft. Mazi Smith should be one of the Wolverines’ top defenders in 2022 but Goode at least gives U-M another quality defensive tackle.
Goode is listed at 6-foot-2, 315 pounds and he had 23 tackles last season, as well as four tackles for loss and three sacks for UCF last season, in addition to an interception, three passes defended, and four forced fumbles.
What Goode’s addition means for defensive line
Goode isn’t a true nose tackle type like Smith but he can definitely fill that role and he’s going to add depth all along the defensive line even if he doesn’t start, which won’t be easy with guys like Kris Jenkins ready to take another step forward.
Another thing to like about the addition of Goode to Michigan football is that he will add another pass-rush presence on the interior of the defensive line.
The Wolverines obviously lost Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo to the NFL draft. Guys like Mike Morris, Jaylen Harrell, and Taylor Upshaw will need to step up on the outside, but one thing that could help is a more productive interior rush.
One thing about Morris moving to the outside as an edge rusher or at least playing on the edge more is that it takes away one of Michigan’s best interior pass rushers.
Goode can help in that regard and he will also help the run defense, as well as the defensive line depth as a whole. So, all in all, it should be a transfer portal win for the Wolverines.
