Jack Stewart is the latest Michigan football player to leave via the transfer portal and we have some reaction from a Wolverines’ perspective.

For the second time in the last week, Michigan football has had a player enter the transfer portal. Last week, it was former four-star safety recruit Jordan Morant and on Tuesday, Jack Stewart, a former three-star offensive lineman, joined him.

Stewart has been a bit of a mystery this spring. After three years, he wasn’t listed on the roster, and according to 247 sports, citing a Michigan spokesman, he wasn’t on the roster because of his intention to graduate in three years, which he did.

Now, Stewart’s name has entered the transfer portal.

"“According to a Michigan spokesperson, the departure was due to Stewart’s plan to graduate in just three academic years. It was unclear at the time to the spokesperson whether the 6-foot-4, 314-pounder had plans to continue playing collegiate football or not. Stewart was listed in the University of Michigan’s official directory as a political science major despite not being on the roster this spring or participating in spring practices.”"

What it means for Michigan football’s roster

His name in the portal indicates that he will try to play college football somewhere else. He came to Michigan as a top-600 prospect but never really seemed to stick, even when he was moved to the defensive line.

While he will have a chance to play somewhere else, probably back on the offensive line, he wasn’t expected to earn a spot on the two-deep on offense or defense, so it’s not a loss that is going to lead to any significant changes.

Sometimes, it just doesn’t work out and it’s better for the player and the school to move on. Michigan football gets a scholarship spot opened up and Stewart can look for a new college football team as a graduate transfer.
