Attrition is always expected after spring ball and Michigan football lost a safety to the transfer portal on Friday.

Jordan Morant came to Michigan football with high expectations. But after announcing his intention to transfer on Friday, he will have to fulfill that potential somewhere else.

Morant was part of the 2020 recruiting class for the Wolverines and he was ranked as the No. 165 player overall in the class, as well as the No. 10 safety. He’s 5-foot-11, 212 pounds, and was expected to compete for playing time right away.

However, it didn’t necessarily happen. The depth chart was crowded last year with veterans such as Daxton Hill and Brad Hawkins. Morant also dealt with some injuries and was passed on the depth chart by Rod Moore and R.J Moten who both started games last season.

Here’s what Morant posted on Twitter on Friday announcing his decision.

What Morant’s departure means for the depth chart

You never want to lose talented depth but Morant wasn’t a guy that was likely to get playing time this season and with a trio of promising freshmen coming in this season with Zeke Berry, Keon Sabb, and Damani Dent, you can see why Morant would head elsewhere.

While Rod Moore has been dealing with injuries, Moten has taken a step forward and Makari Paige is another player who seems to be on the rise, so there is plenty of veteran experience, as well as talent on the back end of the defense.

As far as where Morant will wind up, it’s hard to say. He’s from the state of New Jersey and we have seen other former Wolverines from that state wind up at Rutgers and I wouldn’t be shocked at all if the Scarlet Knights were in the mix at some point but that’s just a guess.

Morant did see action in eight games last season and had one tackle. Ultimately, the Wolverines probably needed a scholarship or two to open up, especially if they are going to add anyone from the transfer portal such as Cam Goode, a defensive tackle.

It also wouldn’t be surprising if Morant was the final departure and that’s something to watch in the coming weeks.
