Defensive tackle (4-2-5 base defense)

Starters: Mazi Smith, Kris Jenkins; Backups: Rayshaun Benny, George Rooks, Mason Graham, Julius Welschof

On the defensive side of the ball, no one has taken a bigger step forward this offseason than Mazi Smith who seems ready to be first-team All-Big Ten in 2022.

He’s going to man the same nose tackle position that he did last season. Next to him is clearly going to be Kris Jenkins who had a sack on Saturday and was really disruptive.

A trio of young defensive tackles in Rayshaun Benny, George Rooks, and Mason Graham all flashed potential too.

The interior pass rush was notably better — something defensive line coach Mike Elston said he wanted to improve — and the interior doesn’t feel like a big need, although Cam Goode from UCF would be a nice depth option to have inside.
