Projecting Michigan Football’s post-spring depth chart
Safety
Starters: R.J. Moten, Rod Moore: Backups: Makari Paige, Keon Sabb, Quinten Johson
Michigan football lost some huge pieces at safety. Daxton Hill is a first-round caliber player but Brad Hawkins was invaluable in the secondary and his absence in 2020 had a huge impact.
The good news is that both projected starters at safety, R.J. Moten and Rod Moore started games for Michigan last season and were productive.
Moten had a really solid spring and while he dropped some interceptions last season, his run support is solid and he just always seems to be around the ball. Moore is probably a little better in coverage and even though he was limited in the spring, he still projects to start this fall.
Top-100 freshman Keon Sabb is another name to watch, as is Makari Paige, a 6-foot-3 safety who saw plenty of snaps in 2020 but didn’t play as much last season.
The battle for the third safety spot will be fun to watch — there’s tons of depth and that doesn’t even include incoming freshmen Damani Dent and Zeke Berry.
