5 Observations From Michigan Football’s Spring Game
By Alex Hinton
Defensive Line Has Options
Michigan’s defensive line will be a cause for concern among fans this season with the departures of Hutchinson, Ojabo, and Chris Hinton. Michigan will not replace Hutchinson and Ojabo’s 25 sacks, but it looks like it has solid depth on the defensive line.
Mazi Smith has enjoyed a solid spring and he will be one of the top players on the team at nose tackle. Jenkins will join him on the interior and I think he emerges as a star this season. I called Ojabo’s breakout last year so let’s see if I can go 2/2. Mike Morris earned a start at edge and his versatility to play multiple spots on the defensive line will be an asset again this season.
True freshman interior defensive lineman Mason Graham started as well. It is rare for true freshman interior defensive lineman to make an early impact. However, Graham looks the part physically at 6-foot-3 and 295 pounds. Graham was praised for polish and fundamentals as a recruit, so he could be one that bucks the trend.
Hinton’s departure will mean a larger role for interior defensive lineman Rayshaun Benny, a little earlier than expected. However, Benny looks like he will be ready when his number is called.
Michigan always seems to have one underclassman on the defensive line that is a solid backup before breaking out as a star/starter the following season. Rashan Gary, Maurice Hurst, Aidan Hutchinson, and perhaps Kris Jenkins fit that trend.
Benny could be that standout underclassman this season. George Rooks also looks ready to make an impact and he delivered a strong performance with seven tackles.
Overall, it was a solid day for the Wolverines. However, the best thing about the day was that were no injuries. And now we wait. We are exactly five months away from the season opener against Colorado State.
