As Selection Sunday came to a close, the Michigan women’s basketball team managed to draw their highest seeding in the history of the program — a 3-seed — and will host both the Round of 64 and the Round of 32 in Crisler Center.

After being known as a doormat program in the Big Ten for most of the program’s history, the women’s team made their first-ever Sweet Sixteen appearance last season. In 2022 the Wolverines came as close as they have ever been to a conference title and secured great seeding for the tournament.

The ladies will face off against 14-seed American at 3:30 PM in Ann Arbor on Saturday. With home-court advantage for the first two rounds, the Wolverines are poised and ready to make a return to the Sweet Sixteen in 2022.

So far this season, Michigan is 14-0 at home — a good sign for a potential tournament run to come. Overall, the Wolverines are 22-6, and 13-4 in the Big Ten. Michigan’s women’s team is currently ranked No. 12 in the nation.

If the Wolverines knock off American this Saturday, they will face either BYU (26-3) or Villanova (23-8) in the following round. Either way, the game will be in Ann Arbor — though both teams will be tough opponents for Michigan.

The entire women’s basketball bracket can be found here. Even with the Wolverines’ high-seeding, they will still have a difficult road to a title in their region.

Led by senior forward Naz Hillmon, Michigan comes into Saturday’s matchup with high hopes. On the season, Hillmon leads the Wolverines in nearly every major stat category — including points per game, rebounds per game, and steals per game. Hillmon averages 21 points, 9.4 rebounds per game, 2.2 assists per game, and 1.1 steals per game. The senior is a core member of the Wolverines’ squad and will be crucial to the team’s success during the tournament.

Game one will be hosted in Ann Arbor on March 19th, at 3:30 PM. Tickets to the Wolverines Round of 64 game can be purchased here.
