Michigan football is taking the week off but is taking part in its spring practices and here are three position battles on offense to watch this spring.

The Michigan football team started spring practice back in February and while the Wolverines are taking the week off due to spring break, they will be back at it on Monday.

While there are plenty of starters back, especially on the offensive side of the ball, the defense has lost a number of key contributors such as Aidan Hutchinson, David Ojabo, Daxton Hill, Vincent Gray, Josh Ross, Chris Hinton, and more.

But the good news is that there is talent waiting in the wings. Many guys that will need to step in 2022 for Michigan football got snaps last season and just need to prove they can handle a bigger role.

Yet, when you have as many talented football players as the Wolverines, there are going to be some position battles and Jim Harbaugh has always said Michigan football is a meritocracy.

So with that in. mind, here are position battles to monitor this spring and we start of course, with the offensive side of the ball.

Quarterbacks

This is the position battle that every Michigan football fan wants to talk about and it’s the one that’s going to dominate the conversation until the fall.

Unlike some other college football teams, Michigan’s QB battle isn’t a competition between two guys the Wolverines hope can play — it’s between two players we all KNOW can play.

Cade McNamara was third-team All-Big Ten and J.J. McCarthy, a former five-star recruit, showed more than enough as a freshman to wonder what he could do in a more full-time role.

At the end of the day, it’s hard to see the Wolverines going wrong and regardless of who winds up starting, Michigan football can and should play both next season.

McCarthy has all the talent but Cade has a lot of moxie and it’s just hard for me to believe that both won’t get plenty of chances to show what they can do next season, regardless of who is named as the starting quarterback.

The fact is this competition isn’t going to be over when next season starts. These guys will keep battling and it might not be decided until it’s obvious one is better than the next.

That’s essentially what Jim Harbaugh said recently. The question is, when will that be?
