3 reasons Denard Robinson is a genius hire for Michigan Football
Michigan football brought back former star quarterback Denard Robinson to work in the recruiting department and here’s why it’s a genius move.
On Wednesday, Michigan football fans got some unexpected news as Ant Wright of The Wolverine reported that “Shoelace” the former U-M QB who was on the cover of NCAA football was returning to Michigan to work in the recruiting department.
It sent a shockwave of excitement through the fanbase as one of Michigan football’s favorite sons will be back in Ann Arbor.
To be blunt, this was a genius move by head coach Jim Harbaugh. Robinson will serve as assistant director of player personnel. Courtney Morgan was the director of player personnel last season and he left for Washington.
Now, Robinson will be working under Tom Gamble, who was previously on Jim Harbaugh’s staff and has over 30 years of NFL experience. He will be the director of player personnel and Robinson is going to have some different responsibilities but his recruiting impact will be huge.
Here are three reasons why this was a great move for the Wolverines.
Denard Robinson unites multiple eras of Michigan football
As Don Thomas pointed out on Twitter, this hiring now means that Michigan football has an assistant coach from the era of every head coach dating back to Bo Schembechler.
Mike Elston also represents the Gary Moeller era and it’s striking that over the last two offseasons, Jim Harbaugh has hired five former Michigan football players in Mike Hart, Ron Bellamy, Elston, Robinson, and Grant Newsome.
Harbaugh’s interest in the NFL this offseason may have stolen the headlines for a while, but now that he is back and committed, it’s easy to see his work on uniting Michigan football and this is another step in that direction.
