Following Michigan football’s 12-2, Big Ten title-winning season in 2021, the Wolverines will again look to solidify themselves as the best team in the Big Ten in 2022.

Though Michigan will lose some key starters on both sides of the ball, the Wolverines will need to rely on the returning veterans and some young talent to step up. A.J. Henning, Michigan’s junior wide receiver, could be gearing up for a breakout season.

The former four-star wide receiver first dawned the maize and blue during his freshman year in 2020, though he saw limited playing time.

During his first season with the Wolverines, Henning only caught six passes for 59 yards and no touchdowns and carried the ball three times for 15 yards and no touchdowns.

Similar to his freshman year, Henning would once again be given limited reps in 2021, though his opportunities to prove himself significantly increased from the year before.

In 2021, the sophomore would catch 10 passes for 79 yards and no touchdowns. Henning’s abilities as a receiver were still limited, but he was permitted a chance to prove his value to the team in other ways.

Henning would establish himself as an exceptional team and trick play threat following the injury of senior wide-out Ronnie Bell. Henning carried the ball nine times his sophomore year for 162 yards and two touchdowns and returned 30 punts and seven kickoffs.

As one of Michigan football’s primary returners, Henning racked up an impressive 453 return yards and three touchdowns. His ball-tracking ability allowed him to fair-catch zero punts and is yet to muff a punt or kick. Henning also showcased his speed when carrying the ball on end-around plays and his kick returns.

Heading into 2022, Michigan football will have many position battles to evaluate. One player that Michigan fans need to keep an eye on is Henning, who could very well work his way to the top of the offensive depth chart and become a key player in the Josh Gattis offense and on special teams.
