With no hoops, all Michigan fans can do is stew about Jim Harbaugh
Now that Michigan’s game against Michigan State has been postponed, all U-M fans can do is worry and wonder about Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh.
There were plenty of doubts leading up to Michigan basketball’s game against Michigan State whether or not it would be played.
The Wolverines were down six scholarship players against Rutgers, so it’s not overly shocking, despite what Michigan State fans are saying, that the game was postponed.
The announcement came this morning from the University and the game will be rescheduled, which is why it’s weird MSU fans are going on about Michigan ducking the Spartans.
However, Michigan fans have other things to worry about and now that we don’t have hoops as a distraction, the only we can do is sit around and stew about head coach Jim Harbaugh.
What a difference a year makes
Last year, a bunch of Michigan football fans were hoping Jim Harbaugh wouldn’t get a contract extension. He did and took a big pay cut in the process. Harbaugh bet on himself and he was right to do so as he led Michigan to a win over Ohio State and a Big Ten title.
Now, his stock is higher than ever and the Las Vegas Raiders are reportedly throwing a lot of money at Harbaugh to try and convince him to be their next head coach.
Chris Balas of The Wolverine reported (subscription required) reported on Friday that Michigan has a deal on the table for Harbaugh to sign but there is no agreement yet.
It seems as though he is seriously considering the NFL option but many have speculated this is more about leverage to get the support he and his staff need to win consistently at an elite level.
There have been rumors about NIL and the transfer portal being among the things Harbaugh wants addressed, but it’s hard to see how those things could be built into a contract. The admissions office probably isn’t going to change because Harbaugh wants it to.
More money for assistant coaches is doable. Plus Michigan could do what Ohio State and other schools have done with NIL and allow their players to use the official Block M logo (It’s beyond dumb that that wasn’t automatic).
Hopefully, the school will meet Harbaugh halfway. Otherwise, maybe he feels that what Michigan football achieved in 2021 is the ceiling and is tired of fighting the college football elites with one hand tied behind his back.
We also know how much he loves Michigan football and I just keep remembering his words: “This is just the beginning.”
Unfortunately, Michigan football fans, all we can do is wait and hope.
