2. Defensive tackle

Now that Hinton has declared for the draft, all eyes are on Mazi Smith, another talented defensive tackle who would definitely get drafted if he chose to go that route.

Smith played the role of nose tackle for Michigan football in 2021 and he stood out. He finished the season with 37 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and three passes batted down.

In other words, he took a big step forward and was great at clogging things up in the middle. If he returns, Michigan will still be in good shape up front, especially with Kris Jenkins, Mike Morris and youngsters like Rayshaun Benny.

However, even if Smith returns, the Wolverines could use another experienced body in the trenches. Hinton was exceptional and was really developing as a pass rusher too. He was probably going to be First-Team All-Big Ten in 2022.

So that loss hurts and while there isn’t a ton of defensive tackle talent in the portal, there will be some names added but they go quick and Michigan will have to strike while the iron is hot.

Also, if Smith returns, the need won’t be as drastic. Michigan has multiple guys capable of starting and being really effective. But if there is a chance to nab quality depth or even a front-line player, Michigan shouldn’t pass it up.
