Michigan’s X-factors

Some Georgia fans have been clamoring for JT Daniels to start at quarterback, especially after the SEC title game but with the news that he has tested positive for COVID-19, his status is sort of up in the air but there is nine days before the game.

But the fact that both teams have multiple options at quarterback is something to watch. Bennett is the better runner and that could be a key factor against Michigan, while the Wolverines may turn to J.J. McCarthy in the run game a little more if it struggles to find room.

The quarterback adds an extra blocker and McCarthy is very athletic, as his block in the Big Ten title game showed. He’s explosive and probably has the most arm talent of any quarterback that will be playing in the Orange Bowl.

So watch for Michigan to find a way to utilize McCarthy’s arm, especially as some sort of run fake. He made a game-changing throw against Ohio State in the second half and is primed to do more.

Donovan Edwards is another guy to watch. The Wolverines have been smartly getting him more involved and he threw the touchdown pass against Iowa. I wonder if there will be another trick up the sleeve or if simply, Michigan will use one of its most talented players more in a game where that kind of talent will be needed.
