Amorion Walker is a huge commitment for Michigan Football
By Alex Hinton
Amorion Walker is a prospect that the Michigan football coaching staff had been vigorously pursuing for months even after he gave his pledge to Notre Dame.
On Wednesday morning, those efforts paid off after Walker flipped his commitment and signed with the Wolverines. While some may scoff at Walker being ranked a three-star, I believe Walker is a huge pickup for the Wolverines.
Walker is listed as an athlete and he is capable of playing wide receiver or safety at the next level. At 6-foot-4 and with 4.4 speed, Walker has the ideal profile of a valuable deep threat.
With Michigan football’s established identity running the ball, Walker can stretch the field when defenses stack the box.
While he does need to add weight to his frame (currently 175 pounds), Walker should develop into being a red zone threat as well once he adds the mass to outmuscle defensive backs.
Amorion Walker has a high ceiling
His ceiling may be even higher on defense. Walker’s frame would make him a very intriguing free safety prospect. He can cover a lot of ground patroling centerfield with his speed. While his experience playing wide receiver could help him as a ball-hawking safety. It sounds like he will be a wide receiver in Ann Arbor, but Walker can help the Wolverines on both sides of the ball.
With Michigan football expected to land four-star wideout Darrius Clemons later today, U-M will be getting two big receivers with the long speed to break open a defense.
They both project to the outside and will complement four-star wide receiver signee Tyler Morris, who figures to play the slot.
Landing commitments from Louisiana is never easy for Michigan and Walker will be the first since Drew Dileo and Carvin Johnson signed with the program in 2010.
Louisiana has been a bigger priority since Michigan added safeties coach Ronald Bellamy to the class. Bellamy played a role in landing Walker, along with head coach Jim Harbaugh and Michigan’s family atmosphere. Perhaps Walker’s commitment can help Michigan open the door in Louisiana at a time when new head coach Brian Kelly is finding his footing at LSU.
Walker will be in competing in the Under Armor All-American Game next month. I am looking forward to seeing how he develops as a Wolverine.
