Michigan basketball will aim to rebound against Tarleton State on Wednesday night following a rough weekend in Las Vegas.

Following one of the worst performances by Michigan basketball in the Juwan Howard era, the Wolverines return to the Crisler Center on Wednesday to take on Tarleton State.

The Texans are in their second season of Division I basketball and are part of the WAC. This will be the first meeting between Tarleton State and any Big Ten team, let alone Michigan basketball.

The Wolverines are 3-2 and ranked 20th in the AP poll. Kenpom rates Michigan as the No. 5 team in the country right now, although that seems high, while Tarleton State is No. 205.

The Texans were 10-10 a year ago and 5-7 in the WAC. But one thing you will notice right away is that they don’t have a single player taller than 6-foot-6. That’s going to make guarding Michigan basketball a challenge.

Tarleton is a team that looks to force a bunch of turnovers and is forcing 15.9 per game. The defense is solid, especially against the 3-point shot.

It will be a good test to see how Michigan can handle the pressure. The Wolverines need to do a better job of taking care of the ball for one and also creating and making 3-point looks.

Hunter Dickinson is likely to see plenty of double teams because no one on the Tarleton roster can guard him one-on-one. That should lead to open looks for Caleb Houstan, Eli Brooks, DeVante Jones, Brandon Jones, Kobe Bufkin and Terrance Williams.

While Houstan is probably the best shooter of that group, even though he hasn’t looked like it so far, all are capable of hitting shots and some need to start doing it with consistency.

Tonight will be a great chance to do that and here’s a look at the odds as well as our prediction for Michigan basketball vs Tarleton State.

Michigan basketball vs Tarleton State Odds and Prediction

According to WynnBet, Michigan is a 21.5-point favorite while the over/under at 129.5. Michigan has struggled to score this season but Hunter Dickinson should be able to dominate in this one or at least create a bunch of open shots for his teammates.

The Wolverines are too talented and have too much size. Montre Gipson is a talented player and is averaging 15 a game for the Texans but he and Jaheim Holden are the Texans only 3-point shooters above 30 percent and I wouldn’t expect Tarleton to do well scoring in the paint.

The Texans also play at one of the slowest paces in the country and actually, Michigan does too. That could lead to a lower score, but turnovers, on both sides will lead to some fast breaks.

In the end, the Wolverines win easily 79-52 and gain a little shooting confidence along the way.
