Michigan football will face Maryland Saturday as the Wolverines try to keep their Big Ten title hopes alive and the possibility of a playoff berth on the table.

This Saturday, the 6th-ranked Michigan football team (9-1 overall, 6-1 Big Ten) will face off against Maryland (5-5, 2-5 Big Ten) in an attempt to keep their Big Ten title hopes alive and the possibility of a playoff berth on the table.

The Wolverines, who battled and narrowly defeated Penn State last weekend, will be looking to improve to 10-1 heading into “The Game”, and need to find their footing on offense if they expect to compete with the Buckeyes the following week.

Though Michigan football is heavily favored and should roll Maryland with little resistance, U-M needs to beware of Maryland catching them off guard in a “trap game”.

Much like MSU’s loss to unranked Purdue this season, the Wolverines are coming off of a huge Big Ten win. With Ohio State on the other side, Michigan must be careful not to overlook a hungry Maryland team. Maryland, who have lost four of their last five games; are locked in on obtaining bowl eligibility with one more win.

If Ohio State beats Michigan State this Saturday and Michigan handles Maryland, both the Buckeyes and the Wolverines could be ranked in the top six in the country, as well as boasting 10-1 record’s heading into their match up the following Saturday.

If Michigan football wins, it will go to the Big Ten championship representing the east. If Ohio State wins, the Buckeyes will go instead.

Notably, if Michigan and Ohio State win this weekend, Michigan will be 10-1 and squaring off against Ohio State for the Big Ten East’s bid to Indianapolis and a potential trip to the College Football Playoff for the third time in seven years under Jim Harbaugh.

Though “The Game” has huge implications for both teams, this weekend it is critical that Michigan leaves College Park with a win. A loss will throw Michigan out of the top-10 and will likely indicate that the Wolverines will finish the regular season 9-3, a huge disappointment after starting 7-0.
