Undefeated Michigan Football takes on the also undefeated Michigan State Spartans in a top-10 showdown in Week 9, the first big game in an end-of-season gauntlet for the Wolverines.

The Michigan Wolverines sit at 7-0 (4-0) with an opportunity to continue their best start to a season under Jim Harbaugh since 2016 when they began that season 9-0.

However, standing in their way is, perhaps, the only team in the Big Ten who has had a more surprising season to this point than the Wolverines — the Michigan State Spartans.

“Little Brother” also has posted a 7-0 record through Week 8, although, like Michigan football, the Spartans haven’t exactly faced a murderer’s row of opponents.

Their best win is probably a home win over Nebraska or a road win over a disappointing Miami (FL) team.

Not exactly an impressive ledger but it’s the manner in which it has beaten many of its opponents that has the Spartans’ confidence at such a high point under second-year head coach Mel Tucker.

So, considering their unblemished start, albeit against a subpar schedule, what can we make of Michigan State?

Who are they really?

Let’s dig into some numbers you need to know ahead of the latest battle for the Paul Bunyan Trophy on Saturday.
