Michigan football lost the commitment of wide receiver Tay’Shawn Trent in the 2022 recruiting class and here’s a breakdown of what it means.

Michigan football fans were really excited to land the commitment of former four-star wide receiver Tay’Shawn Trent.

However, his development hasn’t exactly gone as expected and in recent months, his ranking has started to fall. He’s now a three-star recruit and on Tuesday, he officially decommitted from the Michigan football program.

This really shouldn’t come as a huge shock. There were rumors that Trent may not be part of the 2022 class and just recently, he took a visit to Louisville out of the blue, which was an indication of where things were headed before he made the announcement on Twitter.

Trent says that he will always be a fan of the Wolverines which makes you think it’s an amicable decision on both sides but it seems like he was processed at this point. And looking back, the 6-foot-4, 210-pound receiver who isn’t known for his speed may not have been the best fit with offensive coordinator Josh Gattis and his talk of speed-in-space.

What it means for Michigan in 2022

For the Wolverines, it drops them to 17 commitments overall in the 2022 class. The Wolverines now have just one wide receiver in the class — Tyler Morris and he was a former top-100 recruit before he suffered a knee injury.

He’s on track to recover and should be available to play next season but the Wolverines will need to add to their 2022 class at wideout.

There are a couple of possibilities. One is Dane Key. He’s ranked 221st overall and is expected to decide on Oct. 28. He’s from Lexington and the Kentucky Wildcats have the only crystal ball right now but U-M has been gaining momentum.

Another name to keep an eye on is that of Amorion Walker. He’s a Notre Dame commit and while Michigan has been pushing to flip him as a DB, he could also play receiver.

That’s what Notre Dame is taking him as so that’s another possibility, although he visited Notre Dame recently and it remains to be seen if he will actually flip.

The Wolverines are trying to close strong in 2022 and adding Key or Walker, or both would definitely help.
