Michigan Football: A simple explanation for Wolverines 3-0 start
There are plenty of reasons why Michigan football has gotten off to a 3-0 start, but here’s a simple explanation of the Wolverines’ success.
Football is both simple and complex.
There are numerous strategies to employ, offenses, and defenses to run — many nuances to the game. It’s also about running, tackling, and being physical.
So far, Michigan football has found a ton of success this season, winning three games by an average of 36 points, and it has done so with reverting back to its roots — the running game.
Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines have a loaded backfield and a really solid offensive line. Many questioned the front including starting center Andrew Vastardis, but he’s been impressive as hell, along with the entire unit (Michigan leads the nation in rushing).
But having a great offensive line is just half the battle. You need great running backs too and Michigan football has that — in Blake Corum in particular.
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love Hassan Haskins. He’s special in his own way and he’s a guy that seems to always get positive yardage. He’s the perfect thunder to Corum’s lightning.
But Corum is a different kind of player. His 51-yard touchdown run last Saturday was an example of why and so far, he’s found the end zone eight times.
According to Pro Football Focus, Corum has also been the best running back in college football. Surely, the blocking helps, but Corum is a true difference-maker — one Michigan football has needed for a long time — since the days of Mike Hart.
Through three games, Corum has been as dynamic as any running back in the country and that’s been a huge part of Michigan’s success.
Corum has been a game-changer and looks like a guy who could eventually hear his name called relatively early in the NFL draft.
Another guy who could have that happen, much earlier, is Aidan Hutchinson, who is being talked about by some mock drafts as the No. 2 overall pick. Like Corum, Hutchinson is also graded by Pro Football Focus as the best player at his position.
So Michigan football has one of the best running backs in the country and one of the best defensive ends, which is probably the most important position on defense, as well as a dominant offensive line, oh, and a quarterback that’s been efficient as hell.
Cade McNamara isn’t the star of the show, but he doesn’t need to be. He did throw an 87-yard touchdown last Saturday, but his best stat this season is zero turnovers.
Combined with everything else, but namely, the fact that Michigan football legitimately has two of the best players in the country on both offense and defense is a huge reason why this team is 3-0 and looking for more.
