2. Coaching Talent

Michigan’s struggles weren’t only player-related last season, there were coaching issues. On both sides of the ball, too.

It appears Jim Harbaugh has addressed those issues by bringing in help for Josh Gattis’ offense and a new defensive scheme led by young up and comer Mike “don’t call me a Doobie Brother” McDonald.

Tim Lester has been a steady, albeit mediocre successor to the boat P.J. Fleck left for him to row. Going 24-20 in the MAC West, to date, Lester has guided them to consistency. Hey, that’s great. But to quote Brady Hoke, “this is Michigan for God’s sake!”

Don’t get it twisted, the experience of Jim Harbaugh, the tandem of Josh Gattis and Sherrone Moore on offense, and Mike McDonald will be able to go toe to toe with any other staff in the nation.

No disrespect intended to Tim Lester and company, but when you compare these two staff together there’s no discussion. If this game comes down to a coaching battle the Wolverine sideline has the advantage, no doubt about it.
