Can the Michigan football team start its 2021 campaign off on the right foot? Or will it be “there’s always next year” come Sunday morning?

In case you have lived with Patrick Star under a rock in the deep blue sea for the last several years, you’re well aware of how pivotal this season is for the future of Michigan football.

Don’t get it twisted, there’s no way Jim Harbaugh can afford to let his team’s matchup against Western Michigan end in shock and horror. The Wolverines have to win, and they need to win convincingly.

Western Michigan brings back a potent offense led by the most efficient returning quarterback in the country in Kaleb Eleby and dynamic running back La’Darius Jefferson. Tim Lester will no doubt have his squad fired up for the noon kickoff.

The question is, will Michigan football return to the previous form, or is this a continuation of the same? Well, we here at GBMWolverine believe they will win, and win handily.

Here are three reasons why.

1. Talent Gap

There’s a huge talent gap between these two teams, no way around it. According to 247 Sports composite rankings, the Wolverines have the 15th most talented team in the country. On the other hand, the Western Michigan Broncos have the 106th most talented team in the nation by those same metrics.

I wasn’t surprised to read that, and you shouldn’t be either. Western Michigan’s offense is electric, which is why I’ve talked and written about it ad nauseam, and others who cover the Wolverines have too. But the point remains, Michigan football is a power five team, a Big Ten staple, and a collegiate blue blood for a reason.

Western Michigan is exactly what you think they are, a directional school that is a perennial water carrier in the MAC.

Don’t buy into your buddy’s hot take that the Broncos will run all over the Maize and Blue. Maybe they will, but it sure as heck won’t be because they’re more talented. Michigan will trout out more talent at each position across the field, and it’s not close.
