Excitement is building as another season of Michigan Football inches closer and closer.

The Wolverines are set to take on the Western Michigan Broncos this Saturday in front of a full Michigan Stadium and here are five players to watch in the season opener.

Donovan Edwards, RB

The former four-star running back out of West Bloomfield is expected to be one of the most impactful freshmen for the Wolverines, and will without a doubt see his fair share of carries this season. When asked about the running back room at Big Ten Media Days back in July, here’s what Jim Harbaugh had to say about Donovan Edwards:

"“At running back, Donovan is gonna be really good. There’s such a competitive part about him. He’s gonna be in the mix. You’ll be seeing Donovan Edwards game one.”"

Although Edwards is suspected to be behind Hassan Haskins and Blake Corum on the depth chart, that doesn’t mean that he won’t be a key contributor to the team’s running game.  If the offensive line lives up to some of the hype it received this offseason, then Edwards should have a very successful day against the Broncos.

The matchup against the Broncos should help Edwards get acquainted with the speed and physicality of the college football game before facing a power-5 opponent.

Edwards has big-play capability, and fans should be excited to see what the highly-touted running back can do against Western Michigan.
