Things are starting to pick up in the 2023 recruiting class and Michigan football is already in good shape with a top in-state target.

Obviously, Michigan football recruiting fans are focused by and large on the 2022 recruiting class. The Wolverines, with 15 commitments, still have work to do, however, they also are expanding their efforts in 2023.

That’s the class that could really take off for Michigan football, especially if the Wolverines put together a strong season this fall.

That would provide Jim Harbaugh and the staff with more long-term stability, as well as some momentum. The 2023 cycle should also be better because the new assistants will have a chance to spend more time with recruits because, in the 2022 class, they were playing catch up.

Michigan football leading with key target

Well with one target, the efforts of staff are starting to pay off in a big way. The recruit is Semaj Morgan, a 2023 wideout from West Bloomfield.

Morgan is a dynamic athlete and is 5-foot-10, 175 pounds. He’s ranked 313th overall in the 247 sports composite rankings for 2023 and is a three-star prospect right now. The wideout is also ranked fifth in the state of Michigan.

The Wolverines offered him back in June and were one of the first major programs to do so, although Ole Miss beat Michigan football to the punch in March.

Allen Trieu of 247 sports has compared Morgan to Brandin Cooks and here’s a look at his scouting report for the 2023 wide receiver:

"“Dynamic, lightning in a bottle type of player. Camp season really highlighted his ability to create separation with his explosiveness and suddenness. Also shows good ball skills in tracking it in the air and making tougher catches. He demonstrated that in his sophomore season as well and can be a threat on jet sweeps, as a return man, and on screens with his open-field ability. Not a big guy, but has shown the catch radius and other tools to make up for that. Fits well in most of today’s wide open offenses.”"

There’s a lot to like about that scouting report and he seems like a perfect fit for the speed-in-space offense Michigan is trying to run under Josh Gattis.

Morgan is ranked as a four-star recruit according to Rivals and two recruiting experts from that service, including EJ Holland, who covers the Wolverines, have put in Futurecast picks for Morgan to land with the Wolverines. He’s ranked 238th overall in the Rivals 250 for 2023.

In a recent interview, Morgan also told Holland that Michigan football is at the top of his list.

Morgan is a recruit that is set to blow up on the recruiting trail and it’s good to see Michigan in such a strong position with him.

The Wolverines are also the early favorite for Morgan’s teammate in 2023, Amir Herring, a top-200 offensive tackle who has five crystal ball projections to U-M.

U-M doesn’t have any 2023 commitments yet, but there are some positives.
