Harbaugh hired a new defensive coordinator, along with three other defensive assistants but he also added Mike Hart and Matt Weiss on the offensive side of the ball.
Those moves were aimed at fixing a running game that was really bad a year ago. Hart is an exceptional coach and his presence is welcome. He knows what it means to be a Michigan football player and that perspective is only going to help.
The culture was an issue last year as players have even admitted. But with guys like Hart around, it’s not going to be an issue anymore, and also, new DC Mike Macdonald has gotten rave reviews.
Macdonald said that Michigan’s defense was going to be much more varied this season and deception is really the name of the game.
That was music to my ears. Under Don Brown, Michigan acted like it always had superior talent. Sometimes it did, but when it didn’t Brown’s defenses got exposed and he seemed unable to adjust.
If the Wolverines are ever going to beat Ohio State, they are going to need to outcoach the Buckeyes, and adding Macdonald could be a step in the right direction.

Michigan football needs to be innovative, but most importantly, it just needs to get back into the win column consistently this season. That after all is the only storyline that really matters.
