After landing a defensive tackle transfer, Michigan football should keep looking for talent in the portal, and here are three options the Wolverines should consider.

Even with the addition of Jordan Whittley from Oregon State, Michigan football hasn’t been as active in the portal as some fans would like.

The Wolverines also added Alan Bowman, a quarterback from Texas Tech earlier in the offseason, and the Wolverines have also shown interest in linebackers, the secondary, and wide receivers.

I’m not as worried about wide receivers as the other spots. Ronnie Bell will be solid again next season and Cornelius Johnson has breakout potential.

On the defensive side of the ball, Michigan football is still lacking some depth in key areas, plus, if you have the opportunity to get better, why not take it?

You don’t get the sense that the Wolverines will be overly aggressive in the transfer portal, but here are three transfers Michigan should consider on defense, even after Whittley came aboard.

Jay Hardy, DL Auburn

Coming out of high school, Jay Hardy the No. 101 ranked recruit in the 2020 class, drew comparisons to Nick Fairley. And so it seemed like a perfect fit for the near 300-pounder to head to Auburn.

Unfortunately, things didn’t exactly work out. Hardy only saw action in the bowl game against Northwestern, so the 6-foot-4, 299-pound defensive lineman entered the portal, following spring ball with the new coaching staff.

Over the years, with losses of guys like Aubrey Solomon, Michigan has taken some hits to its defensive line depth and Hardy could certainly help with that.

The former high school basketball player was a top-100 recruit for a reason and the Wolverines did offer him coming out of high school. He’s out of Tennessee and could wind up with another SEC program, but the Wolverines offer a legitimate path to starting next season.

Chris Hinton is probably the one guy guaranteed to start. Mazi Smith is also likely at nose tackle, but Donovan Jeter has a tenuous grip on the other starting job. Some younger defensive lineman could push for the job but so could Hardy if the Wolverines added him in the portal.
