For much of the 2022 recruiting cycle, Michigan basketball has been focused on Dug McDaniel at the point guard position. But after the Wolverines offered another four-star point guard on Monday, that’s about to change.

That offer was to 2022 point guard Seth Trimble, a four-star recruit out of Wisconsin and it’s one that Michigan basketball fans have been waiting for.

At 6-foot-3, 185 pounds, and ranked as the No. 78 prospect overall in the 247 sports composite rankings for 2022, Trimble has been a fast riser, getting a number of recent Big Ten offers prior to the Wolverines making their offer.

Trimble was supposed to meet with Juwan Howard this week and has done so as he announced on Twitter that the Wolverines offered him Monday.

This offer is significant for a couple of reasons. For one, you can only take so many point guards and that’s what Trimble is, although some view him as a combo guard. The second is that this appeared to be the offer he was waiting on.

He is a solid 3-point shooter, better than McDaniel and while he could play off the ball, he’s a point guard and he’s ranked 14th overall at the position in the 247 sports composite.

Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Creighton, and Cal have all offered within the past month or so. He has also liked Michigan for a long time and many have wondered if he would commit once he got an offer.

That changed when Juwan Howard called him and here’s what Trimble told 247 sports about the Wolverines:

"“I like their program a lot, nobody is too selfish and everybody wants to win,” Trimble said. “I really like Coach Howard, I think he’s a very good coach because of how experienced he is and the success he has had on every level he has played or coached on. He’s made a great push for his program.”"

Trimble or McDaniel?

Trimble doesn’t have any crystal ball projections yet. But that could change and I would expect him to visit Michigan basketball soon.

McDaniel has a visit set up and it will be interesting to see if that still happens. That relationship has cooled and Florida is coming on as a team to watch.

Offering Trimble could be a sign that Michigan prefers him to McDaniel. At the very least, it means Howard is willing to take either kid and the Wolverines seem to have a better standing with Trimble right now.

Things can change in an instant, but following this offer, it’s easy to see Trimble being Michigan’s 2022 point guard commitment.
