Michigan football is desperate for help at defensive tackle and the Wolverines offered Tony Fair, a transfer from UAB, hours after he entered the portal.

The biggest need Michigan football has going into the 2021 season is at defensive tackle and it’s safe to say the Wolverines are going to add a body or two there in the transfer portal.

At least, that’s what they are trying to do and those efforts continued on Wednesday when Michigan football offered UAB defensive tackle Tony Fair just hours after he entered the transfer portal as a graduate transfer.

Fair would be a perfect fit for the Wolverines. He’s 6-foot-3, 335 pounds, and would fit perfectly in the middle of the defense.

Michigan didn’t wait long to enter the mix for Fair, but the Wolverines were far from the only program to do so. Indiana, Purdue, and Ole Miss also offered Fair, who was rated as a three-star prospect as a JUCO.

Over the past two seasons, Fair has certainly shown he can be a run stuffer. Back in 2019, in 11 games, he racked up 36 tackles, five tackles for loss, a sack, and forced two fumbles.

Fair is the second defensive tackle Michigan has offered in the portal in recent weeks. U-M could desperately use more depth along the defensive line, especially a mammoth presence inside, so this would be a huge addition.

Yet, we’ve also seen how difficult it’s been for Michigan to land transfers in the portal, and as a defensive tackle, Fair won’t have a shortage of choices.

More recruiting changes

The new director of recruiting, Courtney Morgan, is wasting no time changing the way Michigan does things as multiple hires are expected to join him in the recruiting operation.

According to Football Scoop, Michigan is looking to hire Christina DeRuyter away from Vanderbilt.

"“With the Commodores, DeRuyter had the opportunity to join forces with a completely revamped personnel and recruiting staff led by former 247 director of scouting Barton Simmons as well as Nik Valdiserri and Gerald “Smoke” Dixon. Prior to joining Lea’s staff in Nashville, DeRuyter worked at Texas Tech where she served as the director of on-campus recruiting."

The Wolverine also had this nugget:

"“This news comes on the heels of postings for “Director of On-Campus Recruiting & Operations” and “Director of Football Branding & Strategic Communications” appearing the University of Michigan’s jobs website soon after Morgan was hired in late April.”"

Some fans might wonder why this matters, but the Wolverines have been understaffed in the recruiting operation for years.

Matt Dudek got a lot of criticism, yet he was one guy competing against programs that had multiple people in their recruiting operation outside of coaches.

Michigan should have been doing these things a long time ago and it’s good to see Morgan finally getting things up to speed.
