Michigan Basketball: 3 keys for the Wolverines to beat LSU
By Adam Childs
3. Make them play defense
This is the same key we used when the Wolverines played Iowa. The Hawkeyes seemed allergic to defense and believe it or not the Tigers are worse. According to KenPom Iowa is 53 in adjusted defense while the Tigers are 123.
To say they don’t like to play defense is an understatement. They want to get out and score and are just hoping to outscore you. They give up a lot of points. In almost half their games this year they have given up at least 80 points.
They know they can score a lot of points and also like to get steals and score on the fast break. Michigan needs to be patient and run its offense and force them to play defense. Attack them and put pressure on them.
LSU is also not a very deep team and if they can get Thomas and others in any sort of foul trouble they will be in great shape. The Tigers may come out and pressure you on defense, but they don’t like to do it for long.
Michigan needs to pound it inside, run its sets, and get open shots. Don’t settle for quick shots that allow the Tigers to get out and run. Make them do what the Tigers do what they hate and U-M will be in a great spot to win this game.
LSU is a very good team and the Wolverines need to be ready, but if they can hit these three keys they should be heading to yet another Sweet 16.
