Michigan Football: Wolverines looking good with 5-star CB Will Johnson
It’s decision day for Michigan football recruiting target Will Johnson and all signs indicate the five-star corner will be choosing the Wolverines.
Sunday could be a really big day for the Michigan football program. That’s because it could be the day that the Wolverines land the commitment of five-star cornerback Will Johnson.
Johnson is the top recruit in the state of Michigan for the class of 2022 out of Grosse Pointe and he’s ranked as the No. 11 prospect overall according to the 247 sports composite rankings.
Landing him would be huge. Not only is it essential for in-state recruiting and building a really talented class in 2022, but it’s hard to overstate what it would mean to have a player of Johnson’s ability manning the corner spot for Michigan football.
The five-star defensive back announced a final list of Michigan, Ohio State and USC. His recruitment has been interesting and at one time or another, all three programs had a reason to feel confident in their ability to get him.
However, things seemed to really shift in Michigan’s direction when Jim Harbaugh hired Maurice Linguist. Linguist landed a pair of four-star defensive backs out of Tennessee and that seemed to show Johnson he will have plenty of talent alongside him in Ann Arbor.
It has always felt like Johnson was going to end up at Michigan, not unlike Donovan Edwards. His dad was a Wolverine back in the 1990s and as EJ Holland of Rivals has often said, he was just looking for a reason and Linguist was the final nail in the coffin on this recruitment.
Johnson who is 6-foot-3, 190 pounds, is set to make his decision this afternoon at 3 central time and all signs are pointing towards a commitment to Michigan football.
All nine of his crystal ball projections from 247 sports have him choosing U-M, with a confidence level of seven on a scale of 1-10. Those picks also include experts from Michigan, USC, Ohio State and the national scene, so it’s unanimous at this point.
All the Futurecast picks at Rivals also having him going to Michigan and in a roundtable with different experts, Rivals predicted him to commit to U-M in their final preview of his decision.
Recruits will sometimes shock the experts and unless that happens here, Johnson is going to become a Wolverine later today.
