Guards

Eli Brooks: B

Eli didn’t have the best game offensively and was just 2-for-11 from the field, but his defense was essential and he just put forth a gritty effort. Brooks had nine points and did make 5-of-6 free throws, but also had two steals and two assists.

He made life difficult for D’Mitrik Trice, who scored 16 points but only made 4 of 11 shots from the field. Brooks was disruptive in the second half and delivered a couple of big buckets, even though he missed some shots you’d expect him to make.

Mike Smith: B+

There were good moments and bad moments for Smith in this one but one of the best was after taking an elbow, he scored on the other end and got the foul. That turned the game around, but Smith finished with just six points.

Still, the transfer from Columbia who hasn’t wilted all year under pressure dished out six assists and had just one turnover, plus two steals.

It would be nice if Smith scored more, but the truth is, outside of the nights when he gets hot from deep, this offense is better when others are the primary scorers. He took care of the ball and ran the offense beautifully, proving again that he’s up to the task of replacing Xavier Simpson.
