Michigan Football: Wolverines predicted to flip 2021 DT from Colorado
National signing day wasn’t expected to have much drama for Michigan football, but the Wolverines are likely to flip at least one 2021 DT.
The momentum has been building for Michigan football with 2021 defensive tackle Ikechukwu Iwunnah and with a slew of crystal ball projections from 247 sports to the Wolverines, it looks like a flip is just about guaranteed.
Iwunnah committed to Colorado on Jan. 19 but the Wolverines offered shortly after that and have been putting on the full-court press ever since.
At 6-foot-4, 290 pounds, Iwunnah is exactly the kind of player Michigan football needed to close out its 2021 recruiting class and there’s a general feeling that he’s a recruit with lots of upside.
The Wolverines also landed a commitment from George Rooks recently and the expectation is that Rooks will sign with U-M on Wednesday which is the opening day of the late signing period and now it appears as Iwunnah as though will as well when he signs in the morning.
It was sort of obvious that a flip was possible when Iwunnah started talking about having a decision to make. That’s not something you say if you are still 100 percent committed. That was when you knew Michigan had a chance.
Then the Wolverines sold him on the academics, which were important and then Shaun Nua did a really great job closing, just as he did with Rooks.
The momentum then prompted the recruiting experts over at the Michigan Insider to place in crystal ball picks for Iwunnah this afternoon. He now has four projections for Michigan with a confidence level of seven out of 10.
Obviously, nothing is a sure thing in recruiting and Iwunnah has been notably quiet during his recruitment, but if Michigan can close the deal it would be a nice addition this late.
Is another flip possible?
Certainly, the coaching staff is pushing for Rayshaun Benny and is actively trying to flip him too. There does seem to be a little more hope today in the world of the message boards about U-M’s chances but nothing really concrete.
Texas has been in on Benny too and he’s been a popular pick by experts to flip tomorrow, I just will believe it when I see it.
Landing Benny would be the icing on the cake because he’s an elite defensive tackle prospect, a highly-rated in-state recruit and Michigan State’s top guy. He would also fill U-M’s biggest need with a top-200 prospect instead of a kid ranked outside the top 1,000 which is Iwunnah.
Still, if you are going to bet on potential, you might as well bet on someone with the size and athleticism to be something and that’s Iwunnah, a three-star recruit out of Garland, Texas.
