Michigan Football: Can Wolverines add another DT on signing day?
Michigan football doesn’t have many targets left for the 2021 recruiting class, but there are a pair of defensive tackles who could flip on signing day.
It’s hard to get too excited about signing day because most of the action happens during the early period, which was true for Michigan football which signed 20 on early signing day.
However, there are still some questions lingering for Michigan football on national signing day Wednesday, which serves as the start of the late signing period.
Many recruits will make their decisions Wednesday but some won’t. There are late risers still sorting through offers and others such as top overall recruit J.T. Tuimoloau who are waiting until the spring to try and take visits.
As far as Michigan football is concerned, there are two viable targets that we know of and they are both defensive tackles. One is Rayshaun Benny, a Michigan State commit who has been committed to the Spartans for a couple months but didn’t sign in December.
Michigan and Texas are both in the mix according to Rivals and there could be a chance of a flip, but there doesn’t seem to be much momentum, so unless Benny is being intentionally quiet about it, the buzz is non-existent.
Benny is a 6-foot-5, 275-pound defensive tackle and he would be the final gem for the Wolverines 2021 class. Michigan has kept recruiting him and other commits have been trying to win him over as well, but unless there is a drastic change he’s probably sticking with MSU.
Still hope for a flip?
While the chances of Benny flipping aren’t great, the same can’t be said about Michigan’s other 2021 target such as Ikechukwu Iwunnah, another defensive tackle target committed to Colorado.
Iwunnah is ranked outside the top 1,000 but he’s got a lot of upside and the Wolverines have been building momentum with him ever since offering him last week.
Iwunnah did just commit to the Buffaloes last week and he’s out of the state of Texas, from Garland specifically, which isn’t far from where new cornerbacks coach Maurice Linguist is from, which is just one of a few reasons why there is growing optimism about him flipping.
A decision is expected to come either on signing day or before so watch out for expert picks, although Iwunnah is very quiet on social media and it may not be known until he actually signs.
Obviously, it would be great if the Wolverines got involved with another defensive back, since there are just two signed in 2021, but adding another DT seems to be the best hope for signing day on Wednesday.
