As far as the 2022 recruiting class is concerned for Michigan football, there are few targets that are a bigger priority than four-star wide receiver Tyler Morris.

Morris plays at Nazareth Academy in Illinois and was formerly a teammate of five-star quarterback J.J. McCarthy who signed as part of Michigan football’s 2021 class in December.

Obviously, the two players have a strong connection and have maintained one, even though McCarthy played his senior season at IMG in Florida. In part because of those ties to McCarthy and a solid job recruiting him so far by Josh Gattis, Michigan holds the early crystal ball lead.

Yet, with all the uncertainty, you didn’t know how that could impact things but in some positive news, new wide receivers coach Ron Bellamy quickly connected with Morris according to Brice Marich of The Michigan Insider and here’s part of what Morris said about the interaction:

“It was good. We really just introduced ourselves and got to know each other a little and he wanted to let me know I was a big priority for this class.”

Listed at 6-foot, 175 pounds, Morris is ranked 75th overall in the 2022 class and 11th among wide receivers in the 247 sports composite rankings. The 247 specific rankings have him even higher at 58th overall and either way, he’s a must-land recruit.

The Wolverines do own all four of his crystal ball projections and they are at a confidence level of seven, but Notre Dame does seem to have moved back into contention after a solid season.

From watching his highlights, Morris would be a perfect fit for what Michigan wants to do on offense. He can play in the slot or outside. He’s got tremendous hands and his routes are crisp.

The fact that Bellamy is making contact early is important and he will be key to trying to close the deal with one of the Wolverines top targets in the entire 2022 class.

Former commitment gets offer from Don Brown

Four-star linebacker Tyler Martin decommitted from Michigan football earlier this week and it wasn’t a huge shock considering his relationship to former defensive coordinator Don Brown.

Brown was dismissed from Michigan and wound up at Arizona as the DC, so again, it wasn’t a big surprise when Brown offered Martin the chance to play for the Wildcats in the Pac-12 Saturday.

Martin is more of your classic inside linebacker. He’s 6-foot-3 about 240 pounds and pass coverage is never going to be his strong suit.

And while he didn’t close the door on Michigan, it seems like both sides want to evaluate things, because Morris might not be a fit in the new scheme either. The new staff might have a different view of him than Brown, who obviously has his own wants and likes in players.

We’ll see if the Wolverines push here or if they leave this recruitment alone after the decommitment, but if there isn’t contact, it’s probably a clue that U-M was just as interested in going in another direction.
