Michigan Basketball: Is a top Wolverines target in 2022 deciding soon?
Michigan basketball has long been viewed as a favorite for four-star point guard Dug McDaniel and according to a report from Eric Bossi of 247 sports, he could be making a decision soon.
McDaniel is one of the Wolverines top point guard targets in the 2022 class and if Bossi is right and he makes a decision soon, it could be a good thing for Michigan basketball.
While Michigan was hoping to be in the mix for Jaden Bradley, a five-star point guard ranked in the top 10 in 2022, he’s been trending with crystal ball projections to Kentucky.
Yet, McDaniel, much like 2021 point guard signee, Frankie Collins, is electrifying and even though he’s just 5-foot-9, he would be a tremendous addition, especially as the No. 81 player overall in 2022 according to the 247 sports composite rankings.
If you look at the 247 sports specific rankings, McDaniel, who is out of Fairfax, Virginia, is ranked 59th overall and 10th among point guards.
The other top contenders mentioned are Florida, VCU, LSU and Georgetown and here’s what McDaniel told Bossi about the Wolverines:
"“The point guard, (Juwan Howard) lets his point guard create. He lets them create and it is looking good for them. They are having a great season, so you have to look at that.”"
Michigan basketball has been a consistent contender and even though he doesn’t have any crystal ball predictions, there are two Futurecast picks for McDaniel to U-M.
Just recently, our Wolverine Corner broke down some of the top 2022 recruiting targets that could wind up with the Wolverines and McDaniel was on the list.
As McDaniel mentioned, he would be a great fit under Juwan because he’s a playmaking point guard and could thrive in the Wolverines ball-screen heavy system.
Mike Smith has been exceptional this season and when you watch highlights of McDaniel, it’s hard not to be reminded of Michigan’s current 5-foot-11 point guard.
McDaniel is tremendous creating out of ball screens but he’s a very capable shooter too. He’s also very athletic and shows a nice penchant for finishing for a player of his size.
It will be interesting to watch the crystal ball picks in the near future if a decision is coming. Bossi is the top analyst at 247 sports and he hasn’t made any predictions yet, so keep an eye out, but if Rivals and others are correct, McDaniel could be headed to U-M.
