Dug McDaniel

Dug McDaniel is a 4-star point guard from Virginia and is a former AAU teammate of current Michigan basketball freshmen Hunter Dickinson and Terrance Williams. Michigan basketball will be looking to add a point guard to their 2022 class and I think McDaniel will end up being that guy.

Dug is a small point guard. He’s listed at 5-foot-10 on some recruiting sites but based on what I’ve heard, that’s generous. I just love his style of play and love watching him run an offense. McDaniel is a pass first point guard and prefers to make plays for others.

He has really put an emphasis on scoring this season as he looks to continue to develop all aspects of his game. I think he’s one of the quickest guards in the 2022 class and one of the best passers in the country.

If you go back and look at his previous rankings on various recruiting sites, his ranking has consistently dropped over the last two years. That is a result of him being undersized and members of his class continuing to grow.

For someone listed at 5-foot-9 to be ranked inside the top 60 as a recruit, that is telling and shows just how talented he is. Rankings are typically more about upside and less about current skill, and McDaniel continues to be ranked high despite not having a lot of NBA upside due to his size.

McDaniel spoke to 247Sports back in November and had this to say about Michigan:

"“Coach Juwan [Howard] is like my uncle, I grew up playing with his son and grew up spending some time with him so I look at him as family. They’ve been saying a lot of good stuff, just checking in on me, probably once every two weeks just checking up on me and seeing how I’m doing.”"

The recruitment of Dug McDaniel has gotten more attention this season as several teams have started to show interest. Florida, Georgetown, VCU, and LSU are all in the mix but as we sit right now, I think Michigan is the overwhelming favorite to land the speedy point guard from Virginia.

It would not surprise me if McDaniel commits to a school very soon.
