Michigan Basketball: Can Wolverines still add to 2021 recruiting class?
By Max S.
Efton Reid
This summer I had a good feeling that he was a lock to this Michigan basketball class. He’s familiar with the program, he is great friends with Hunter Dickinson and Terrance Williams, and Michigan needed a center.
However, as his recruitment dragged out, Michigan filled up their class and the Reid chatter started to fade away. Reid recently spoke to 247Sports and really only mentioned Ohio State and Virginia. The reason I feel like Michigan may make a late push is the emergence of Hunter Dickinson.
I don’t think Juwan Howard anticipated that he would be a potential one and done and that may put the Wolverines back in the market to fill that center spot. If Juwan thinks that Dickinson will leave after a year or two, the outlook for the center position for Michigan is extremely unclear.
Austin Davis will be gone after this season. Diabate is more of a power forward and will likely be a one and done, and Brandon Johns is only there for one more season and has struggled at the center spot.
Juwan can always hit the transfer market for a center, but adding a guy like Reid does make a bit more sense long term. As of now, this seems unlikely and it’s still unclear whether Michigan would even take him in this class. But if Juwan starts to get the feeling that a center is needed, it could make a lot of sense for both sides.
Reid is a traditional center who has built his game with fundamentals. He has the potential to be an elite defender and rebounder and has a quickly improving offensive skill set. He has also really improved his athleticism over the past year.
