Michigan Basketball makes big move up the KenPom Rankings
By Max S.
After back to back blowout wins against Northwestern and Minnesota, Michigan basketball remained undefeated and made a big jump up the KenPom rankings.
If you’re a college basketball nerd like myself, you know all about the KenPom rankings. They are an analytics driven and efficiency based ranking system that ranks every college basketball team in the country.
After two consecutive wins over ranked teams, Michigan basketball jumped all the way up to tied for 6th in the country.
KenPom is the most respected and the most accurate ranking system that is out there. Michigan’s No. 6 ranking is no fluke and has certainly been earned.

Michigan’s recent jump has a lot to do with those last two ranked wins but also has to do with significant improvement that they have made on the defensive end of the floor. The Wolverine defense now ranks as the 18th best in the country according to KenPom.
But the strength of this team is still the offense where they are ranked 6th best in the country. Michigan basketball ranks extremely high in almost every single offensive category.
They rank in the top-10 in adjusted offense, effective FG%, 2-point percentage, and free throw percentage. They are also shooting a respectable 35.8 percent from deep.
It feels like this team is just scratching the surface of their potential right now and as they continue to get into the meat of the Big Ten schedule, don’t be surprised if this Michigan basketball team continues to rise up the KenPom rankings.
Here is the current KenPom top-10:
- Gonzaga
- Baylor
- Villanova
- Wisconsin
- Iowa
- Michigan (Tied for 5th)
- Texas
- Illinois
- Tennessee
- Houston
The next game for Michigan basketball was scheduled to be this weekend against Penn State but that game had to be cancelled due to Covid-19 issues with the Nittany Lions squad.
Michigan will face their third consecutive ranked opponent next Tuesday as the Wolverines take on the Wisconsin Badgers.
