Something needs to be decided between Jim Harbaugh and Michigan football soon because this getting more ridiculous by the day.

Will he or won’t he? That’s the question on the mind of every Michigan football fan in regards to Jim Harbaugh and the contract extension offered by U-M.

Will he sign it or won’t he?

Over the weekend, there was a report from Bruce Feldman that there was confidence that a deal would get done for Harbaugh to stay head coach of the Wolverines.

That came on the heels of a report by Chris Balas of the Wolverine ($) that a deal was days away from being announced. And then over the weekend, John U. Bacon, a trusted Michigan football source offered this take:

So at this point, we know an offer is on the table and an offer that’s different from the original three-year extension. As I have said, that three-year deal was going to make it tough to recruit and didn’t really address the stability question so the length doesn’t shock me.

As long as the buyouts are still reasonable for Michigan to be able to move on at any time, say following another really bad season next year, and I’m good with that.

But at this point, what is the holdup?

Whether you want Harbaugh to return or not, most Michigan football fans just want this over. If Harbaugh is going to come back, why the delay at this point? Is he really holding out hope for an NFL job as some have suggested and will only sign with Michigan when that’s exhausted?

Sam Webb of the Michigan Insider ($) reported Monday morning that Harbaugh was expected back in the office tomorrow but that there is no staff meeting scheduled at this point, so it appears the coaches on staff right now don’t know anything either.

If something isn’t done in the next few days, that will be a good sign that Harbaugh isn’t returning. In fact, if Harbaugh doesn’t sign the deal tomorrow, I’d call Matt Campbell and move on.

If Jim is really all in and wants to bet on himself, sign the deal. Get this charade over with. If he wants to make some splashy coordinator hire at the same time he announces his extension, then I guess it will be worth the wait.

But other than that, this just looks bad and it doesn’t make him look as committed as he claims to be. The bottom line is that the next day or two will be telling and as Bacon said, this isn’t over yet.

At the same time, it needs to be, because this whole process is just nauseating and the next thing I hear about Harbaugh should be a final decision.
