Michigan football extended an offer to a three-star athlete from Virginia over the weekend and here’s a breakdown.

Over the weekend, Michigan football added two new names to its offer list for the 2022 recruiting class as Brian Jean-Mary extended a pair of offers.

The first offer actually came on Christmas Day as the Wolverines offered 2022 quarterback DeQuandre Smith, an unranked quarterback out of the state of South Carolina.

Smith told Maize and Brew that Jean-Mary reached out to him on Christmas to let him know about the scholarship offer:

"“It meant a lot,” Smith told Maize n Brew. “(Jean-Mary) got in contact with my coach a lot, and (Christmas) was the first time we spoke. I think he’s a very nice man. I like him. He said ‘Merry Christmas’ to me and my family, and that my coach speaks very highly of me. Then he told me I had the offer from the University of Michigan.”"

It was notable that Michigan football was the first program to offer Smith, who is a 6-foot-1 dual-threat quarterback. He’s started to get more mention on the recruiting trail and I would expect more offers to follow now that U-M has jumped in with one.

Yet, whenever recruits are allowed to take visits again or even in a self-guided fashion, Smith said he was “most definitely” interested in getting to Ann Arbor according to the same Maize and Brew article.

3-star Tyler Banks gets offer

The other recruit to get offered by Michigan football was three-star athlete Tyler Banks out of Virginia. Banks is 6-foot-3, 220 pounds and is rated as the No. 722 prospect nationally according to the 247 composite rankings for 2022 and the 59th-best athlete.

While Banks plays both sides of the ball, the recruit out of Crewe, Virginia, told Maize and Brew that the Wolverines were recruiting him to play on the defensive side of the ball.

If he’s being accurate with his listing of 6-foot-3, 220 pounds, than linebacker makes a lot of sense, which could also explain Jean-Mary reaching out to him.

The Wolverines have been showing interest in Banks for a couple of months now according to Steve Lorenz of the Michigan Insider ($), so the offer shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Right now, Banks has one crystal ball prediction for Virginia Tech. Some other schools in the mix are Boston College, Virginia and Buffalo. However, on its face, this recruitment seems very winnable for Michigan.
