Harbaugh gets his QB

There was quite a bit of drama surrounding a number of Michigan signees Wednesday, but there was none surrounding J.J. McCarthy.

The five-star quarterback who is ranked 22nd overall in the 2021 class and as the No. 2 pro-style passer, never wavered in his commitment and that’s probably a big reason why the class held together as well as it did, especially on the offensive side of the ball.

Beyond having all the physical tools and make no mistake, McCarthy has everything you could want in a quarterback, outside of being a little undersized, it’s the intangibles that make him special. Here’s what Harbaugh said about his new quarterback Wednesday via 247 sports:

"“Very athletic. Throws it extremely well. Plays with a lot of energy. He’s really good. Got that “it” factor. You know, when you step into a huddle, how important that is for the quarterback to have that. The confidence, the energy. Also, a guy that makes a lot of good decisions and plays really good. Competes, gives it everything he has. All necessary qualities for a quarterback.”"

This program has had a number of issues under Harbaugh but finding a truly elite quarterback has been one of them. Jim has had some quality QBs in Jake Rudock, Shea Patterson and Wilton Speight (2016), but he’s never gotten that true difference maker and hopefully, McCarthy is the guy that can put U-M back on the map.
