Michigan Basketball: 3 Things we learned in win against Ball State
Hunter has to start
This isn’t meant to take anything away from Austin Davis, who has actually turned into a productive player for Michigan basketball, but Hunter Dickinson should be the starting center.
The 7-foot-1 freshman provided even more evidence on Wednesday night against Ball State, scoring 12 points and grabbing three offensive rebounds.

He missed a few more shots and was 2-of-5 from the charity stripe but he was still 5-of-9, blocked a shot and only picked up a couple of fouls in 21 minutes of work. Dickinson defends ball screens and helps better than Dickinson and has that innate passing ability too.
Davis is shooting 67 percent from the field and he should continue to play a solid 10 minutes or so off the bench. He was a spark last season and he will be again this year, especially once we get into conference play.
But it’s silly not to start someone who is obviously one of your best players. And now that the tougher part of the schedule is here, it will be interesting to see when Juwan Howard pulls the trigger on the move.
It’s going to happen at some point and it should have probably happened already. As much as I love Austin Davis and I do, less minutes for him, means more for Dickinson and Brandon Johns and after three games, it seems clear that both of those guys need more time on the floor.
It’s also clear that Dickinson should start and you just have to think that switch is coming.
