Michigan football outlasts Rutgers in a wild contest that lasted over four exhausting hours and took three overtimes to finish an instant classic.

Things looked promising early with a three and out on defense. Then on the ensuing drive Cornelius Johnson fumbled a sure fire first down which promptly turned into a 7-0 Rutgers lead not long afterwards. It got worse as the Scarlet Knights jumped out to a 17-0 mark right before the half.

Michigan football eventually fought its way back into it with a deep bomb from Cade McNamara to Johnson to get within 10 by intermission.

The Wolverines continued to methodically chip away with each passing down that followed. Then,  on the opening kickoff of the second Giles Jackson made it a three point affair and put the Scarlet Knights on notice. The comeback was in full effect from that moment on.

In the fourth quarter, Michigan football got its first lead since the Minnesota victory. They took that advantage and never wavered after that. It felt like they were destined to lose with the Scarlet Knights not giving up and tying it up in regulation , but not tonight.

As bad as it was for many moments out there, Michigan can celebrate the thrill of a hard fought victory when traveling home to Ann Arbor.

It certainly took an eternity to get there, but the maize and blue prevailed to get the triumph in Piscataway that they have been searching for the past three weeks now.

Perhaps it can amount to something with a winless Penn State program coming to Ann Arbor next Saturday, then the home finale with Maryland to follow. Before we get to that, here are three takeaways from the win over Rutgers.
