Make changes and get the run game going

After the running game looked spectacular against Minnesota, getting more than 250 yards, it was lackluster against Michigan State and despite an average of more than four yards per attempt, the Wolverines couldn’t get the tough yards when needed.

In fact, they couldn’t get yards on first down, as multiple times they were forced into second and third and long because of first-down run failures.

Going forward, two things need to be done: First, some changes need to be made on the offensive line. Chuck Filiaga and Andrew Vastardis simply got overmatched against Michigan State and multiple times, you could see them getting shoved into the backfield.

Freshman Zak Zinter was really impressive throughout camp and he’s already got the size to play and if the coaching staff really believes he is one of the best offensive lineman from the 2020 class, then throw him in. I’d say the same about Zach Carpenter or Karsen Barnhart.

The best guys have to play and if guys aren’t getting it done, whether they are a senior or have been with the program a certain number of years, they need to be relegated to the bench.

And that goes for the running game too, although all of the four backs have had their moments this season, some sort of rotation needs to be established. In two games, not a single running back has carried the ball 10 times and that’s a major issue.

Quit being cute and trying to keep everyone happy. Play the best guys and get back to the basics.
