Michigan football is off to a solid start with its 2022 recruiting class and now, a top-200 DB is being projected to join the Wolverines.

The 2021 recruiting cycle hasn’t even finished and already recruits in 2022 have made their decisions and one who could be making a decision soon is Michigan football target Isaac Thompson, a defensive back out of St. Louis.

Thompson is a 6-foot-1, 190-pound prospect who can play both safety and corner. He’s ranked No. 146 overall in the 247 composite rankings and is the No. 16 cornerback prospect.

He’s also planning to take a self-guided visit to Michigan later this month on Nov. 14 and after watching the Wolverines dominate Minnesota last week, Thompson came away impressed.

Here’s what he told 247 sports ($) about Michigan’s win over the Gophers:

"“I loved how their defensive backs played all game. They played fast and physical all game and were great in coverage. They looked like one of the best defenses out there to me and I feel like their defensive backs play how I play.”"

Thompson is actually a Michigan State legacy, but the Spartans aren’t a factor in his recruitment right now. Michigan football is a contender along with Texas, who actually owns all three of Thompson’s crystal ball projections from 247 sports.

But as we have seen, Texas has been losing some serious momentum, both with its play on the field and the decommitment of top 2022 recruit Quinn Ewers, who is now expected to land at Ohio State, along with Domani Jackson, another DB Michigan is recruiting hard.

The crystal balls were placed for Texas last month and one happened to be from the Michigan Insider’s Steve Lorenz. However, another Michigan recruiting expert, EJ Holland of Rivals ($), is now projecting Thompson to U-M and put in a Futurecast pick Wednesday night.

Here’s what Holland wrote about Thompson:

"“I think Michigan has really gained control of this recruitment. Remember, Thompson is set to make his way to Michigan for a self-guided tour on Nov. 14. He will have an opportunity to really bond and hang out with the commits. And he will be joined by both his mother and father, which is huge.”"

J.J. McCarthy, the quarterback in the 2021 class for Michigan football, has been part of setting all this up and Thompson’s dad has been in constant contact with McCarthy’s according to Holland, so that’s another good sign.

Plus, as Thompson is getting set to decide in December or January, according to Holland, he isn’t taking a self-guided visit anywhere else, so if that timeline sticks and the self-guided visit goes well, Michigan seems like the logical choice.
