Top Michigan football recruiting target Rayshaun Benny announced he was going to delay his decision and it’s not a good thing for the Wolverines.

One of Michigan football‘s top priorities in the 2021 recruiting class has delayed his decision, as four-star defensive tackle Rayshaun Benny won’t be deciding Oct. 25.

Benny, who is one of the top prospects in the state of Michigan, was expected to choose between the Wolverines, Michigan State, Penn State and Kentucky on Sunday. He’s viewed as essential since U-M doesn’t have any defensive tackle commitments.

But now, we don’t know when he will be deciding. Here’s what he wrote on Twitter:

To be fair, Benny is preparing for an Oak Park game this weekend. But his team is 0-5 and there is no chance of them making the playoffs, so this will be his final high school game.

So the decision was going to come after his season was over anyway. However, it does seem like he wants more time to think and that seems to be what this decision is about.

From a Michigan football perspective, this is disappointing because this seemed to be pointing in the Wolverines direction, as multiple recruiting experts expressed positive sentiments about the Wolverines chances of landing Benny Tuesday.

As the long-standing favorite, at least dating back to the summer, it’s not generally a good sign when a recruit keeps delaying his decision, not for the favorite at any rate.

We saw this with Drew Kendall, a four-star offensive lineman who still hasn’t made a decision but is not expected to be part of Michigan’s class after having nearly 20 expert picks in between 247 sports and Rivals at one time.

Rocco Spindler also ended up choosing Notre Dame over Michigan, despite a number of Michigan experts believing he was on the way until just before the end.

At the very least, this means Benny is more undecided then we may have thought. If Michigan was the true favorite, it seems like he would decide Sunday. Now that he wants to wait and see how the college season goes, it makes you feel like Michigan State and Kentucky have a good shot.

As EJ Holland noted Tuesday ($), he thinks Benny has bought in to some of the negative in-state talk about Michigan’s recruiting, so who knows.

All I can say is that I feel even less confident about Benny winding up at Michigan before and it was feeling like a 50/50 recruitment even then.
