Michigan Basketball: Ranking the contenders for 5-star Caleb Houstan
By Max S.
#4: Duke
It’s kind of weird to have a blueblood like Duke ranked last on this contenders list. But in the case of Caleb Houstan, I strongly believe that is the case.
Duke already has two five-stars committed for the 2021 class. As a matter of fact, both of their commits are ranked in the top-six of the class.
Paolo Banchero: Five-star ranked 3rd overall
AJ Griffin: Five-star ranked 6th overall
Not only does Duke already have those two five-stars committed, they also lead for Patrick Baldwin Jr. who is the number one overall prospect in the class. It just feels like this class has the potential to be stacked and I’m skeptical that Caleb Houstan would fit well with Duke.
Houstan is considered a true wing. He can play the two, three, or four. AJ Griffin and Paolo Banchero are also wings and I don’t think Houstan has as clear of a path to immediate playing time when comparing to the other contenders on this list.
Here’s what Houstan said to 247Sports about Duke when talking about his final four:
"“The strong history of them getting guys to the League, they are a reputable program. Once again, the relationship with them is probably one of the biggest things. They believe they can get me better and prepare me to get to the next level. I’ve talked through the coaches about how much (R.J. Barrett) loved it and how much it helped him prepare for going to the League.”"
Even though Duke may be ranked last on my list, you cannot count them out. If Caleb Houstan is truly still undecided, a blueblood like Duke could make a strong final push and put them into contention.
If Houstan has intentions of joining other five-stars, Duke may be a great fit along with Alabama.
